In the beginning of 2014, there were rumors that Samsung Galaxy S5 and LG G3 would come equipped with iris scanners. However, it was not to be and both the smartphones came with fingerprint sensors instead. Now it seems that ViewSonic, a relatively small fish in the huge smartphone market, may be incorporating the iris recognition technology in its new smartphone.
ViewSonic’s upcoming V55 smartphone will supposedly have iris scanners that will scan your eye for biometric identification. Iris patterns for every individual are unique which makes it quite a secure method of identification. Once the owner’s iris is scanned and stored in the smartphone, only he can unlock and access data from it. No one else can unlock the phone. The iris scanner protects files and folders present in the handset. So if by chance someone else manages to unlock the phone, even then, he/she will not be able to access the information easily.
The iris scanner will be located on the top right-hand corner of the ViewSonic V55 smartphone but will be hidden with a sliding cover unlike the fingerprint scanners which are permanently exposed. To unlock the phone, you have to slide open the cover which will activate the scanner. A light will indicate that the scanner has been activated. Then you will have to scan your eye with the sensor and as it matches the iris image stored in the device, it will unlock. The iris recognition technology will perform certain other authentication functions too but we will know more about them during the official announcement.
Body of the ViewSonic V55 is probably made of plastic, with a metal frame and very thin bezels. It will also have several separate lenses that could be fitted on its camera. Other specs include 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p display, 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 CPU and Adreno 306 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and a 13MP Sony camera at the back which can be fitted with additional lenses as mentioned above. The phone will support 4G LTE networks to enable high speed browsing. Battery capacity is not known yet but it will be of high capacity in view of the iris scanner and 4G LTE support.
ViewSonic is expected to launch the handset sometime this month. Its price has not been revealed as yet but it will have to be competitive if it wants to survive the cut throat competition in the smartphone market.
